Themes in Geography

(GEO376) -  Manolis Pratsinakis, Eirini Skrimizea

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

Geography is an interdisciplinary field that bridges the natural and social sciences, integrates multiple temporal and spatial scales, and embraces diverse epistemological traditions. In this sense, geography offers multiple lenses for understanding the world and interpreting the interrelations between environment, society, and space. Building on this foundation, the course introduces Greece through both human and physical geography, connecting local and national processes to broader Mediterranean and global contexts. It begins with an exploration of the urban fabric, focusing on the evolution, challenges, and resilience of Athens as the country’s capital and dominant metropolitan region. It then broadens its scope to include themes such as regional inequalities, demographics, geomorphology, biodiversity and environmental change, rural transitions, insularity, and environmental governance in an era of depopulation, biodiversity loss, and overtourism.
