Theano S. Terkenli (1960-2025)

Professor and founding member of the first Department of Geography in Greece, University of the Aegean, since 1994. Faculty at the Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Tourism Planning, Administration and Policy, (University of the Aegean), since 1999, and at the International Interdepartmental M.Sc. in Sustainable Tourism Development: Cultural Heritage, Environment, Society (Harokopio University, University of the Aegean, Université-Paris I- Panthéon Sorbonne), since 2018. Ph.D. in Geography, University of Minnesota—Twin Cities, USA (1986-1993); M.Sc. in Landscape Architecture, University of Wisconsin—Madison, USA (1983-1986).

Areas of scientific research, publishing and teaching span Human Geography, with an emphasis on Cultural Geography, Landscape Studies and Critical Perspectives to Tourism. Active member and organizer of conferences, board member of a large number of international and Greek scientific associations and organizations, and journal editorial boards. Leadership and organizational roles ranging from research teams to international events, at the forefront of geographical research, education and community service. Long series of lectures by invitation, as well as awards and grants, such as the prestigious Roy Wolfe Award 2017, ‘for outstanding contributions to the field and discipline of recreation, tourism and sports geography’, from the American Association of Geographers—Recreation, Tourism and Sport Specialty Group.

Starting October 2024, Professor Theano S. Terkenli, Department of Geography, University of the Aegean, held the position of Chair of the Landscape Research Group, LTD. Founded in 1967 and based in the UK, the Charitable Incorporated Organization Landscape Research Group (LRG) is a global, independent and charitable community with a shared interest in landscape, from natural landscape to urban design and from scientific research to community support, working to advance interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary landscape research through dissemination, communication and exchange. https://geography.aegean.gr/en/

Special Issue [SI_CULGEO]:

Cultural Geography, Landscape Theory, Tourism. Geographical Perspectives Inspired by the Legacy of Professor Theano S. Terkenli

The European Journal of Geography announces a Special Issue dedicated to the memory and scholarly legacy of Professor Theano S. Terkenli, University of the Aegean, Greece, who passed away on 30 June 2025.

Professor Terkenli shaped research in cultural geography, landscape theory, and tourism geography. Her work influenced academic debate, research agendas, and generations of scholars through teaching and supervision.

This Special Issue honors her intellectual contribution by bringing together original research that engages with, advances, or critically reflects on the core themes of her work. The issue seeks to advance contemporary geographical scholarship in areas central to the journal’s scope.

Thematic Scope

The Special Issue welcomes cutting edge research and critical perspectives in cultural geography, landscape theory, and tourism geography. Submissions may adopt theoretical, empirical, methodological, or interdisciplinary approaches.

Indicative themes include:

  1. Landscape theory, analysis, and interpretation
    Conceptual and interpretative approaches to landscape as cultural, social, and spatial construct across disciplines.
  2. Cultural landscapes, heritage, and landscape perception
    Landscapes as carriers of cultural memory and heritage, shaped by historically evolving perceptions.
  3. Landscape, identity, and sense of place
    Landscape as arena of identity formation, memory, belonging, and cultural negotiation across scales.
  4. Landscape justice, governance, and the common good
    Power, law, conflict, and governance in landscape. Implications of the European Landscape Convention.
  5. Cultural economy of space and landscape transformation
    Globalization, ICTs, mobility, and cultural flows shaping contemporary landscapes.
  6. Sustainable tourism, place making, and landscape
    Tourism led landscape change and strategies that balance development, conservation, and cultural integrity.
  7. Cultural geographical approaches to tourism development
    Critical perspectives on tourism, mobility, consumption, and production of tourist spaces.
  8. Participatory landscape planning and public engagement
    Community involvement and democratic decision making in landscapes shaped by tourism and mobility.
  9. Landscape education and landscape conscience
    Educational approaches and formation of landscape awareness across generations.

Submissions are expected to reflect the spirit of Professor Terkenli’s work by combining strong conceptual grounding with geographical sensitivity to place, culture, and landscape dynamics.
